Lab Chemist Duties. Lab chemists analyze chemical compounds and use the information they discover to find new applications for those chemicals, with the ultimate goal of improving our quality of life. They work in a number of industries, such as pharmaceuticals or petrochemicals.
Analytical chemists assess the chemical structure and nature of substances. Their skills are needed for a variety of purposes including drug development, forensic analysis and toxicology. Analytical chemists can specialise in areas as varied as toxicology, pharmaceuticals and forensics.
To get onto a Master's course in pharmacy you need three A-B grade A-levels in chemistry and biology, maths or physics along with five GCSEs (grades A-C), including English language, maths and at least one science. Or you could use alternative qualifications, including: foundation degree in pharmacy.
All chemists work indoors in laboratories and other controlled environments conducive to compromised research. They work with various types of scientific equipment, such as spectrometers and chromatographs, which allow the scientists to examine and evaluate chemicals and their compounds at a microscopic level.
